Prince played a benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT) company at First Avenue, Minneapolis. The rest is History!
The concert was instigated by Loyce Houlton, artistic director of the long-time modern
dance troupe. She had met Prince during the band's dance classes and asked him to play a benefit
show. Prince's concert raised $23,000 for the financially beleaguered MDT dance company.
The concert, which was Wendy Melvoin’s debut with the band, was recorded, using a mobile
recording unit that was brought in from New York. The basic tracks of three songs from the concert
were used on Purple Rain: "I Would Die 4 U," "Baby, I'm A Star," and "Purple Rain." The concert is
generally regarded as one of the most exciting shows he has ever played.
The evening began with the MDT dancers performing four dances, representing an abbreviated
history of dance. The highlight was a number choreographed by Houlton to Prince's "D.M.S.R.".
Prince's 70-minute set opened with "Let's Go Crazy," the first of no less than six new songs
performed during the concert. Prince continued with the more familiar "When You Were Mine,"
before playing a cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You" (from Blue, 1971; it became "A Case Of U"
when Prince covered it on One Nite Alone... in 2002). It was performed as a solo number by Prince,
accompanying himself on guitar, with some discreet synth touches.
A drum machine beat began and Prince introduced another new song, "Computer Blue." It was
followed by his forthcoming single, "Delirious," and yet another unheard track, "Electric
Intercourse." "When it comes to you, I'm automatic baby," Prince said as an intro to "Automatic." "I
Would Die 4 U" and "Baby, I'm A Star" were played in sequence, without interrupting the drum
machine beat. "Is there a party here tonight?", Prince asked before going from "I Would Die 4 U"
into "Baby, I'm A Star." After "Little Red Corvette," Houlton came onstage to present Prince with a
rose, saying, "We don't have a Prince in Minnesota, we have a King!". Prince then closed the set with
a 13-minute version of "Purple Rain." "Thank you very, very much," he said before leaving the stage.
He returned for an encore, closing the set on a high note with 'D.M.S.R.".

In 1985, Prince played a free concert for L.A. students. He didn't want any publicity!
‘'In the 1980s, I was a new teacher of blind students in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Previous to my teaching career I had been in the music business; as a result I had the opportunity
to ask Prince to do a show for special needs children in L.A. I was surprised and pleased that he
said yes and had his people put together a date at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
The students were bused to the show not knowing whom they were going to see.
Prince did not want publicity for this, so only a few people knew about it.
It was so thrilling to see the kids' reaction when they learned whom they were going to see in this surprise show.
It was financed entirely by Prince, who had just finished a stint of sold-out shows at the Forum in Inglewood as part of his world tour in 1984-85.
Hundreds of children watched the concert from their wheelchairs, and Prince provided signers for the deaf students.
For many of the children, it would be the only live show they would ever see.
Prince was a loving, generous and gentle man. He will be missed here on Earth but will be a great addition to the angels in heaven.’'
Ingrid Geyer, North Hollywood

Paisley Park Celebration 2017

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — One visit to the sprawling Minnesota recording complex that Prince called home may not be enough.
Paisley Park, in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, opened as a museum in October, just six months after the "Purple Rain" megastar died there of a painkiller overdose. Prince left behind more than 7,000 artifacts, including costumes and shoes, and more than 121 guitars and instruments.
Paisley Park spokesman Mitch Maguire said the Oscar- and seven-time Grammy Award-winning musician did archivists a favor because he would "seemingly hang onto everything." That allows the museum to switch archival pieces out, so fans coming back for tours will have a new experience.
Paisley Park opened as a museum in October, just six months after the 'Purple Rain' megastar died there of a painkiller overdose. Prince left behind more than 7,000 artifacts, including costumes and shoes, and more than 121 guitars and instruments.
Among the items planned for future exhibits are the red wool hat Prince wore during an all-star jam at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and a blue Stratocaster guitar Prince played during part of his legendary 2007 Super Bowl halftime show.
A four-day celebration of Prince will be held April 20-23 at Paisley Park during the anniversary of his death.

-A wonderful document of a historic and unique show on 2 x CD90 filled to the max (timings: ca. 140’ main show + 40’ aftershow = 180’ in total)

Claude Nobs, the MJF's founder and director, has slowly begun to think about retiring from the Montreux Jazz Festival over the last couple of years.
But before doing so, he had TWO big artists on his wish list, which he really wanted to bring to the MJF to finish-off his professional career in beauty.
The first one was his friend and long-time Swiss chalet neighbor David Bowie (who has also recorded songs in Montreux) - Claude achieved to put Bowie on the bill in 2002, where he played a sensational, extra-long set.
The second artist on Claude's special wish-list was - PRINCE! With that in mind, you will understand Claude's very own enthusiasm about Prince’s attendance, originally billed the «Surprise Jazz Night».
Working for this and rumored for many, many years, Claude finally made the impossible happen in the 2007 edition of the festival.
