The Purple One descended on Dubai in typically mysterious fashion. Reminiscent of 2014’s guerrilla gigs around London, where he turned up at small venues at short notice and wowed crowds with two-hour sets filled with hits from the last 35 years, his gig at Pacha was a bit of a conundrum.
This was a fundraiser gig, tickets were sent out once a donation had been made to Autism Rocks. The organisation must have been delighted with the turn out because excitement in the run-up to the show was at fever pitch, and the intimate venue was packed with people eager to get a glimpse of the artist now known as Prince again at close quarters.
Joined by his latest band, the all-female 3RDEYEGIRL, he started with Let’s Go Crazy, the opener from classic album Purple Rain. And crazy we went, and stayed that way for the next two hours. Most of the songs were transformed by the tight band into a slow, groovy funk – with some sublime organ and guitar solos from Prince himself, and lead guitarist Donna Grantis.
With a back catalogue spanning more than three decades, there will always be some songs that don’t make the set list (no Where Doves Cry!) but hearing Prince perform Nothing Compares 2 U (which he wrote for a side project before Sinéad O'Connor made it famous) at touching distance will be more than enough for most fans.
With a strict no-cameras policy, the heavies at either side of the stage created their own light show by shining torches at people who tried to flout the rules – which caused a slight annoyance from time to time. But to moan about that would be churlish.
We witnessed one of music’s real legends, close-up. A songwriting genius, a virtuoso musician and a born showman, Prince didn’t let the elevator bring us down. His second (and final) encore comprised of a 15-minute Purple Rain, which brought the house down.
Gigs don’t get much better than this.

2015.02.02 Autism Rocks
Prince & 3rdEyeGirl donneront 2 concerts le 2 février prochain à l'initiative de l'association Autism Rocks. La soirée se déroulera en deux temps : un show à 20h00 et un autre à 1h00 du matin.
D'autres évènements caritatifs auront lieu à Dubai le 4 février.

2015.01.11 72th Golden Globe Awards
Dimanche soir, Prince a
fait une apparition surprise lors de la 72ème cérémonie des Golden
Globe Awards organisée au Berverly Hilton Hotel à Los Angeles. Le Purple
Yoda a remis le prix de la meilleure chanson originale à Common et John Legend pour leur chanson “Glory” tirée du film Selma de la réalisatrice Ava DuVerney.
Selma retrace la lutte historique du Dr Martin Luther King
pour garantir le droit de vote à tous les citoyens. Une dangereuse et
terrifiante campagne qui s’est achevée par une longue marche, depuis la
ville de Selma jusqu’à celle de Montgomery, en Alabama, et qui a conduit
le président Jonhson à signer la loi sur le droit de vote en 1965.

1984.09.05 Prince at Agora in Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Certain moments burn themselves into your memory; in our video player is one of those moments for me.
September 5, 1984, the pop star Prince was trying to stealthily visit Cleveland to see his then-girlfriend Sheila E perform at the Agora.
Prince, was a red-hot sensation in the music biz at the time. His movie “Purple Rain” was released just a few weeks earlier.
We here at WEWS got a tip he was on his way via private jet to Burke Lakefront Airport. Reporter Paul Orlousky and I went to Burke Lakefront Airport and received clearance to be on the tarmac for the stars arrival.
One problem, one very big problem got in our way – Prince’s bodyguard. Charles “Chick” Hunstberry said “We don’t want no pictures taken, OK?”
We had permission to be there and informed Chick we would be staying. He sent two of his helpers to block our view but as you’ll see in our story, we do see Prince walking to his “limo”.
There was a real limo waiting for Prince, but he didn’t use it. The limo was a decoy, Prince went to the Agora in a camper, you’ll see a quick shot of it in the story.
On to the Agora and the wrath of Chick.
WEWS sent two camera crews to the East 24th St. concert venue - Jim Gates and yours truly.
At 6 foot 8 inches tall and seemingly as wide, Chick's his mission was to keep any media away from Prince, even though we were on public property.
As we began to shoot, the former pro wrestler was like a moth to the light, heading for which ever one of us had a light on. I didn’t use a light for long.
Prince went inside the Agora during the chaos you’ll see in our player.
The story aired at 11 p.m., Orlousky telling the story of Prince, his movie, his music, his persona and the attacks - with a bit of the choice sound bites bleeped out.
Orlousky left WEWS in 1985 for WKYC and later WOIO.
Hunstberry died in 1990 at age 49.
